When Not to Write a Press Release - Website Launches

There are plenty of reasons to write a press release to gain publicity for a business, organization, person, or website. However, press release writing can be overused. One of the most common press release ideas that I see overused is the launch of a new website.I’m not saying that launching a website is never worth a press release. The problem is the sheer volume of new websites that are launched. You can launch a website easily within a day (like I did with this blog today)… so can thousands or millions of other people. As with any other subject matter, if you want to use a press release campaign to publicize your new website, make sure that you have a truly newsworthy angle first. Here are just a few reasons a press release for a new website might be newsworthy:

  1. No similar site yet exists (be sure to check thoroughly; just because you think you have a new idea, it doesn’t mean a similar unknown website doesn’t already exist)
  2. There’s a completely unique spin on a hot website niche
  3. The website is a vehicle for a new or greatly improved product or service that would have mass or good niche appeal

There are many other good reasons to use press release campaigns for a website launch. Just look at your angle from the perspective of your target audience for the news itself, and don’t rush into a press release with high expectations until you can provide a quality news angle.
