Are Your Comment Policies Hurting Your Conversations?

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on April 29th, 2009 in General

I’m a strong believer that communications professionals (especially in PR and social media areas) have a responsibility to be somewhat liberal in their comment policies on blogs, networks, etc. Why? Because I don’t think you can really advocate for building conversations if you aren’t open to them yourself–even if they may get a bit heated.

Social Media and Stupidity

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on July 7th, 2008 in General

OK. The recent Toronto Star article by Lisa Summers (”Are They the Dumbest Generation?”) didn’t limit itself to social media, but the Digital Age as a whole. And Heather already beat me to it. Still, I think it’s worth commenting on here, with social media being attributed even in part to my generation’s apparent lack [...]

Myspace vs Facebook Traffic Reality Check

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on June 21st, 2008 in General

Judy Gombita of PR Conversations forwarded me a link to a post by Dave Fleet, looking at Google Trends statistics for Myspace and Facebook. The chart makes it appear that Facebook is getting more traffic than Myspace, as Dave’s title suggests: Did Facebook Traffic Outgrow Myspace Traffic Last Year?
That supposition would be wrong.
Note: I’m not [...]

Feeds and Feed Readers: A Clean Slate

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on June 21st, 2008 in General

I wiped out my feed reader a few weeks back, and haven’t gotten around to re-populating it. Now, I’d like your help.
I don’t read many blogs regularly. For the very few that I do, I prefer going to the blog itself. But there are others I know I should be following more vaguely, and I [...]

Naked PR Changes and What Indie Musicians Can Teach You About Social Media

As you may or may not know, before I started working predominantly with online entrepreneurs and webmasters, I worked almost exclusively with musicians. I’m still involved with that scene quite a bit. I’ve also mentioned here recently that I think independent (indie) musicians are often a perfect example of those using social media effectively in [...]

Social Media Spam and the Death of Twitter

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on June 17th, 2008 in General

You’ve heard me talk about the predictable nature of Internet marketers (not all, but enough to make an impact), and how they abuse new social media tools. Will this group of social media spammers be the death of Twitter?
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying Twitter’s going to actually vanish or anything. What I [...]

Digg Looking for Director of PR

I don’t normally post job info here, but thought this was worth mentioning for any of you PR folks looking for a new place to call home in the social media realm. Digg is looking for a Director of Public Relations - read the details.

The SMR Revisited: With Todd Defren

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on June 4th, 2008 in General, PR Tools, Press Releases, Social Media

(Note: Not all of my concerns here about social media releases are directly related to Todd’s comments. This post is part interview, part rambling, and chock full of my always-unsolicited opinions.)
I don’t think it’s really a secret - I’m not a huge fan of the social media release (SMR). I raised some criticisms / concerns [...]

Do People Really Trust Bloggers?

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on May 13th, 2008 in General

I know I’ve been talking a bit much about blogging lately, and I’m not going to stop just yet. I was sent a link a while ago to a data chart from Forrester Research highlighting sources that people trust the most when it comes to information about products and services.
Not surprisingly, the results show that [...]

Facebook Sucks: A New Perspective

Posted by Jennifer Mattern on May 11th, 2008 in General

Today a comment was left on my post, Top Ten Reasons Facebook Sucks, that I thought was intelligent enough as well as amusing enough to highlight in its own post (you can still find the comment on the original post as well). This perspective comes from a reader named Simone and goes a bit beyond [...]
